ParkSwap is Disrupting Status-Quo With Park Swapping

Lead User Researcher

Dive into the maze of urban parking challenges and discover the need for solutions that are seamlessly convenient.

The Vision

The goal was to develop a user-friendly parking exchange application for a New York-based startup. The app aimed to facilitate a marketplace where users could reserve and exchange parking spots for a fee. The primary objective was to create a seamless experience where users could post available parking spaces, set a price, and allow nearby users to purchase those spots in real time. The transaction would only be completed once both parties were geo-located at the same spot, ensuring the successful exchange of the parking space before payment was processed.

The Task

Deliver the iOS development strategy for an app that offers a crowdsource digital exchange for parking space swapping.

The Personas

Judith was recently selected to move forward with a job opportunity. She is scheduled for an in-person interview at a large firm. She is very excited about this opportunity and can't wait to chat with the potential employer about her skillset and how she can add value to the team.

The interview will take place in an office building on the lower east side. She lives in Queens, NY, therefore she decided to drive. She knows the commute is long and she will need time to grab a coffee and explore the area to ensure she arrives on time.

As she leaves for the interview, she realizes that although she will arrive early to the interview, she may lose time trying to find a parking spot. She hopes she can find someone with an available parking spot to swap, before she arrives, saving her time to walk the blocks it takes to get to the office building.

Needs to find a parking spot before she arrives at a very important interview which will help her secure a job if she is successful.

Objectives

  • Find a parking space in the lower east side
  • She is a planner, therefore she did plan out to leave at least 2hrs before her interview to allow her time to arrive and find parking

"I can't afford to lose this opportunity, therefore, I need to be there on time to make a great impression"

Delivers important information to and from downtown brokerage firms for investment firms.

Objectives

  • Wants to be able to make extra money without it impeding getting in and out of the area
  • Anything he does do for extra cash cannot interfere with him getting his route done on time

"I'll only wait as long as I can before heading to the next drop off on my route"

The Results

I delivered a comprehensive document outlining the initiative, emphasizing key insights from the discovery phase. This included a detailed journey map and notable findings that would guide the development process moving forward. See a preview below.

My strategy included an experience so seekers can easily find and secure parking spots by either entering their location manually or using GPS. Once a spot is located, they receive GPS directions to meet the spot owner, complete the swap, and then rate and tip the owner via popular cash apps.

For swappers, I focused on ensuring they could easily choose the best seeker based on location and rating. After selecting a match, they share their location, wait for the seeker, complete the swap, and then receive payment, with an option to rate the experience.

ParkSwap provides a convenient, crowd-sourced solution for parking, allowing users to park closer to their destinations at a lower cost. In the end, the stakeholders were extremely pleased with the MVP and are eager to continue user experience sessions to further refine and enhance the application.

What is Yinnette's background history and education?

I am a user experience researcher, product strategist, and design leader with a focus on enterprise service design. With 24 years of experience, I began my career as an engineer and transitioned into digital product design, eventually specializing in product strategy and user experience research, where I’ve been for the past 14 years.

My expertise lies primarily in enterprise environments, often working on the agency or service design side. I’ve focused on developing internal productivity and efficiency products, such as hiring solutions, HR systems, and employee resource repositories. My user base has predominantly been employees within these organizations. My skill set includes developing comprehensive solutions for new product rollouts, company pilots, product improvements, and digital transformations for existing solutions, serving user bases of up to 100,000 or more.

I studied Web Design then Visual Communications at the International Academy for Design and Technology based in Tampa. I have a  certification in Design Thinking from the Luma Institute. I received formal training in Six Sigma and hold a Green Belt certification from The New York Times and PM1 from Cardinal’s Agile Program.

My process involves independent research, participant recruitment, session planning, design thinking workshops, focused ideation sessions, wireframing, and creating high-fidelity designs. I also support product owners in feature refinement and collaborate with engineering teams to QA the experience, ensuring the features align with my research and business requirements.

Most recently, I worked at Discover but was laid off earlier this year due to Capital One’s acquisition of the company. I am now seeking my next opportunity, ideally in service design, which is my passion. I am excited to find a company where I can continue to make a lasting impact.

Most recently, I consulted for a startup called Muzes. At Muzes, I joined the team as the Director of UX to lead their UX team, which grew into having a much larger role and leading product strategy. Muzes is an AI-assisted generative procurement platform, akin to LinkedIn for procurement. Procurement teams can generate extensive questionnaires for their suppliers, who create profiles and respond to these questionnaires. The platform uses AI, including sentiment analysis and LLMs, to grade and score the responses.

I made significant contributions to the product strategy, assisting the engineering team and stakeholders in documenting all features. I conducted extensive research with design partners and discovered that the product being built was quite different from the original plan. I helped realign the entire team with the new product direction and led the design team in creating a custom design system that matched the new goals. I also helped engineering focus on delivering a more attainable MVP.
